Data encryption and device control are key pieces of security required for personal data protection compliance

Overview

Data breach or loss is among the top concerns of organizations. Just one incident can create a massive impact involving financial loss and, worst yet, loss of customer confidence and corporate reputation. How do data breaches usually happen? It can be based on hacking or malware attacks, other breach methods include insider leaks, loss or theft of a physical hard drive of files and human error. The rippling effect is that customers’ personal data (E.g.name national identification number, photograph, the video image of an individual, mobile telephone number, personal email address, thumbprint, name, and residential address) may be compromised, which in turn may lead to significant damage.

Data security incidents arise each year in ASEAN, and the organizations' penalty is due to data breaches. Each episode can cost an organization a fine of up to S$1 million or 10 percent of the organization’s annual gross turnover, whichever is higher. This massive potential cost to organizations can be avoided through data loss prevention.

Data Encryption of Confidential Information

JP1 enables organizations to encrypt data on hard disk drives of PCs, removable media devices (including USBs, smartphones, and CD/DVD), and file servers. Organizations can also prevent unencrypted data from being transferred into removable media devices.

Encrypted data ensures that only authorized people can access confidential and sensitive content. Unauthorized people who have unlawfully accessed the content will not be able to read it.

Device and Network Control

To prevent unauthorized data transference, JP1 allows organizations to restrict devices to be used for data transference. In addition, only authorized removable media devices may be permitted for data transfer.

Connection through the outside network can also be restricted via JP1, whereby PCs cannot be connected to the Internet without passing through the company network. The use of VPN can also be enforced on company devices to ensure that all activities go through the organization’s internal servers to maintain high-level security for data loss prevention.

Device and network control measures through JP1 can effectively mitigate the risk of data loss.
