Hitachi VeinID Technology

How it works

Finger Vein authentication system flow chart

The basic principle of Finger Vein authentication system is shown above. Near-infra rays generated from a bank of LEDs (Light Emitting Diodes) permeate the finger and are absorbed by the hemoglobin in the blood. The areas in which the rays are absorbed (i.e. veins) thus appear as dark areas in an image taken by a CCD/CMOS camera located on the opposite side of the finger. Image processing can then construct a finger vein pattern from the camera image. This pattern is then compressed and digitised so that it can be registered as a template of a person’s biometric authentication data.

Your Finger Is Key – Advantages of Finger Vein Based Biometric Identification

Compared with other biometrics, Finger Vein offers significant advantages such as high accuracy rates, high resistance to criminal tampering, speed of authentication and compactness in size.

The advantages of Finger Vein Biometric technology are seen from the comparisons of the types of biometric technology below:

Biometric technologies comparison graph

Biometric technologies comparison table

High Accuracy

It is a known fact that around 3% to 5% of the worldwide population cannot use fingerprint technology because of the inability to lift a usable fingerprint image from their fingers.
Finger Vein biometrics does not have such a problem and nearly all users can be enrolled. Studies conducted by the International Biometric Group show that Hitachi's Finger Vein Biometric technology displayed high usability and strong accuracy rates:

  • False Acceptance Rate (FAR): ‹ 0.0001%
  • False Rejection Rate (FRR): ‹ 0.01%
  • Failure To Enroll Rate (FTER): Near Zero

High Reliability

Hitachi VeinID technology is able to extract the unique Finger Vein pattern from the vein image that is captured through the veins inside a person’s finger. Finger veins are not distinctly visible to the eye and are hidden beneath the skin, thus, it is extremely difficult to forge and tampered with and impossible to manipulate. The security of data will not be compromised since Finger Vein pattern is non-traceable and non-vestigial.

High Acceptability

Light is transmitted through the veins to gather biometric data rather than reflected off the skin’s surface, so there is no interference to image quality and accuracy due to dry, wet or dirty skin. Finger Vein image is resistant to temperature and humidity and are generally unaffected by temperature or humidity. It can authenticate users of all skin types resulting in a near Zero Failure to Enroll Rate (FTER) unlike other biometrics.

Quick Authentication

Using advanced compression technology, Hitachi VeinID allows fast authentication of less than 0.5 seconds. Matching Finger Vein pattern is completed within a blink of an eye, providing users a speedy authentication experience without the hassle and without the wait.

Easy to Use

Hitachi VeinID technology requires no physical contact with the sensors, only a minimal area of a finger guide comes into contact with the finger. It is both easy to use and very hygienic.

Access Control

Hitachi offers the following Access Control applications:

  1. Physical Access Control (eg. entry to buildings, offices, facilities, etc.)
  2. Logical Access Control (eg. logging into computer resources, database, etc.)

Using Finger Vein Biometric technology, Hitachi has developed products that address the security needs of today's organisations.

Physical Access

Reliability and usability of biometrics are key concerns. Corporations, institutions and governments alike are looking beyond card access systems. The need for accountability is driving the implementation of advanced security technologies such as biometrics for Physical Access Control.

Hitachi addresses these concerns by implementing Finger Vein biometric technology into a range of versatile Access Control products suitable for a wide variety of applications.

Logical Access

Computer infrastructure and resources are critical assets of any organisation. Authorisation of access to such valuable resources either from within the organisation or from outside the organisation requires reliable and secure authentication in order to protect such assets. Current methods using a combination of multi factors such as User ID, passwords and tokens, etc, remains inadequate. Biometrics are considered the most credible solution, however, the size of device limits the type of biometrics that could be effectively deployed. Fingerprint has the advantage in terms of size but its performance in terms of usability and reliability remains a stumbling block to its widespread adoption.

The level of security and usability which Finger Vein technology is able to deliver is an ideal fit for such applications. Through ongoing R&D, Hitachi continues to develop compact Finger Vein devices specifically customised for Logical Access applications.

With the advent of e-transactions (B-to-B, B-to-C, etc) over the internet, reliable and secure authentication is required to eliminate fraud, unauthorised access and disputes. Finger Vein technology is well positioned to meet such requirements.

Time & Attendance

Misuse of time clocking using conventional methods such as punch card or proximity card are well-known. The costs of such misuse can be quite substantial to any organisation because of bloated payroll and revenues lost due to non-productivity. Positive authentication of employees is necessary in order to overcome this. Speed and usability are key considerations for such an application in order to avoid long queues and disgruntled employees.

Finger Vein technology is best suited for such applications with its many unique features.
